U.S. REITs – Felt Like It Happened Again


This week has seen another noticeable decline in REIT stocks and in the main indices S&P500 and Dow Jones Industrial average. It was like what had happened the previous week, but on a smaller scale. For at least two REIT benchmarks — MSCI US REIT (NYSE:^RMZ) and Vanguard ETF (NYSEARCA:VNQ), a large part of that decline occurred on September 1. In the end, both indices decreased by 4.7 percent this week.

We would not say that REITs have been specifically hit by market conditions. Indeed, markets have been quite volatile, and REITs have been affected as much or sometimes more. Nor would we call this moment fearful: Unlike in 2008-2009, the U. S. economy is not in free-fall.
